Associate Professor of Health Informatics
November 13, 1964 – March 17, 2016
Passed by the IU Indianapolis Faculty Council at their meeting on April 19, 2016.
Katherine Lynne Schilling, associate professor of health informatics, died on March 17, 2016, in Pittsburgh, PA, of inflammatory breast cancer. She will be greatly missed by family, friends and colleagues. Kathy was born in East Orange, NJ, the second child of Judith Louise Stephenson Schilling and Peter Ernest Schilling. She grew up in New Kensington, PA. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Matteline Eccles, of Carmel, IN; and her siblings, Donna Ginader (Kenneth), of Dayton, OH, and Stephen Schilling (Nicole), of Fort Thomas, KY. She is also survived by her parents, and by Robert Eccles. She was the well-loved aunt of Christopher and Caroline Buchheit, and of Ava Ann, Eleanor Lynn and William Schilling, with whom she did craft projects that produced a rich treasury of "kid art." Kathy enjoyed traveling with her family, and spending time with family and friends.
Dr. Schilling was educated at Boston University (E.D., 2002), at the University of Pittsburgh (MLS, 1989), and at Susquehanna University (BA, 1986). She was a 1982 graduate of Valley High School, New Kensington, PA. A professor in the Department of BioHealth Informatics at the IU School of Informatics and Computing at IU Indianapolis, Kathy also held an adjunct appointment at the IU School of Nursing. Her expertise and background were in health informatics, health information, and health sciences librarianship. During her 12 years at IU Indianapolis, Kathy was professionally active across a wide range of organizations that included the Indiana University Simon Cancer Center, the Walther Cancer Foundation, and the Regenstrief Institute.
Before coming to IU Indianapolis in 2004, she served as an academic health sciences librarian at the University of Pittsburgh and at Boston University Medical Center, where she specialized in information literacy and information management. During this time, she developed information-focused curricula and programming with several schools at both institutions.
Throughout her career, Kathy was active in the Medical Library Association and the American Medical Informatics Association, and she was a senior member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP)—the professional development credentialing program of the Medical Library Association (MLA). She served as associate editor of the Journal of the Medical Library Association (JMLA) and was a consultant on the MLA’s Health Information Literacy Program for the promotion of patient-self management through hospital librarianship and clinical partnerships.
Kathy was a very active member of the School of Informatics and Computing, serving on various committees—most recently as the secretary of the Faculty Council. As those who knew her will attest, she was witty and insightful conversationalist and colleague. Kathy was a dedicated teacher who cared deeply about her students. In recent months, serious health challenges limited her energy and involvement at the school.
THUS, BE IT RESOLVED, that this memorial resolution be placed in the minutes of the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Faculty Council with a moment of silence observed in honor of Dr. Schilling.
This resolution is written on behalf of Dr. Schilling’s colleagues, friends and family and will be shared broadly with them.
Prepared by Dr. Josette Jones, Associate Professor and Health Informatics Program Director and Steve Mannheimer, Professor and Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, IU School of Informatics and Computing at IU Indianapolis.
