The Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD) academic community is profoundly saddened by the passing of one of its most respected and beloved colleagues. Dr. James Sarbinoff was Clinical Assistant Professor of Periodontics at the Indiana University School of Dentistry, IU Indianapolis. He served his department, school, and students with dedication and distinction. He served as a clinical instructor in the pre-doctoral and graduate clinics. He served as a lecturer/instructor in the different modules for both pre- doctoral and graduate students. He was a mentor to both the dental students and the graduate students.
James was born on December 29, 1947 to the late James Gill Sarbinoff and his mother L. Eileen (Adair) in Indianapolis, Indiana. James was a 1966 graduate of Speedway High School. After high school he attended Indiana University and in 1970 received his A.B. in Zoology. He then attended Indiana School of Dentistry and became a Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1974. James went on to specialize in Periodontics and received his M.S.D. and Certificate in Periodontics. James served as a Delegate/Alternate Delegate with the Indiana Dental Assoc. between 1986 and 2000. He also served on the Indianapolis District Dental Society as Vice President between 1994-1995 becoming President in 1995-1996. He received his AAP Board Certification in 1994, and was a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.
James will be greatly missed by his devoted wife Tamara (Griffith) Sarbinoff of 39 years, his three loving children James Griffith Sarbinoff, Erin Marie Griffith Sarbinoff and Grant Griffith Sarbinoff, James's brothers, Terrence and Brett Sarbinoff, his two sisters Stacy Hunt and Susan Shaw, Uncle Joe Kostoff, his step mother Diane Sarbinoff, mother in law Narvella Griffith, along with several nieces and nephews.
Dr. Sarbinoff was a practical joker and always had a smile on his face. He enjoyed music and was always willing to join in the singing at the faculty teaching retreats. Dr. Sarbinoff will be sorely missed and remembered with great admiration and fondness.
THUS, BE IT RESOLVED: that this memorial resolution be adopted by the Faculty Council of Indiana University School of Dentistry and placed in the school’s minutes and its permanent archives; that a copy of this memorial resolution be delivered to his wife.
This memorial resolution will also be placed in the minutes of Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis Faculty Council with a moment of silence observed in his honor.
