The Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD) academic community is profoundly saddened by the passing of one of its most respected and beloved colleagues. Professor Elizabeth Hughes was a Clinical Associate Professor of Dental Hygiene at the Indiana University School of Dentistry, IU Indianapolis. She served her department, school, and students with dedication and distinction. She served as a clinical instructor in the dental hygiene clinics. She served as a lecturer/instructor in multiple modules for the dental hygiene students and was a mentor to several of them.
Elizabeth was born on, April 19th, 1947. She is survived by her husband, Allen; three sons Christopher, David, and Michael; mother, Annabel Conners; siblings, Herman Stewart, Arnold Stewart, Don Stewart, Geralyn Hayes, Mike Stewart, and Jim Stewart; and countless friends and colleagues. She is preceded in death by siblings Richard and Steven Stewart.
Elizabeth did her undergraduate work at Southeast Missouri State University and then an Associate Degree in Dental Hygiene at the University of Missouri. She completed her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education at Indiana University and then a Master of Science Degree in Adult Education. She was appointed as Part-Time faculty in the Department of Periodontics and Allied Dental Program in 1994. In 2000, she became a Full Time Faculty member. She received several awards for teaching. She was the first Dental Hygienist and currently the only faculty member from the Dental Hygiene Division to be elected as President of the Faculty Council at the School of Dentistry.
Elizabeth was funny and always had a smile on her face. She cared very deeply about her students and was always encouraging them to do their best. She enjoyed music and was always willing to join in the singing at the faculty teaching retreats. Professor Hughes will be sorely missed and remembered with great admiration and fondness.
THUS, BE IT RESOLVED: That this memorial resolution be adopted by the Faculty Council of Indiana University School of Dentistry and placed in the school’s minutes and its permanent archives; that a copy of this memorial resolution be delivered to her husband.
This memorial resolution will also be placed in the minutes of Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis Faculty Council with a moment of silence observed in his honor.
