Professor of Prosthodontics, Director of Graduate Prosthodontics
October 16, 1942-June 16, 2010
Passed by the IU Indianapolis Faculty Council at their meeting on September 7, 2010.
The Department of Restorative Dentistry and Indiana University School of Dentistry mourns the passing of Professor Carl J. Andres.
Dr. Carl J. Andres earned his DDS and MSD degrees from Indiana University School of Dentistry and completed a Maxillofacial Prosthetics Fellowship at M.D. Anderson Hospital. After retiring as a Colonel from the Air Force, he began his career here in 1986. In his 21 years as a faculty member at Indiana University School of Dentistry, Dr. Andres has demonstrated exceptional abilities as a mentor and leader. Originally Director of Undergraduate Fixed and Removable Partial Prosthodontics, within 2 years he was appointed to direct the Graduate Prosthodontic and Maxillofacial Prosthetics Programs.
As the Graduate Program Director, his mentoring, leadership and caring came to the forefront.
Dr. Andres directed about 120 graduate students from almost 40 different countries. These students have gone on to become influential practitioners, teachers, and university administrators throughout the world.
Dr. Andres serves as an astounding example for professional citizenship. Dr. Andres certainly set an extraordinary standard for his students when he served 7 years on the American Board of Prosthodontics, including 1 year as its President. He was involved in many professional organizations, often as an officer or member of the Board of Directors.
Dr. Andres is an exemplar of the community service model. Besides serving on many department, school, campus, and organizational committees, Dr. Andre donated his care to the Gennesaret Free Clinic and the Academy of Prosthodontics Outreach Programs for Native Americans in Browning, Montana; Pine Ridge, South Dakota; and Juneau, Alaska. He was the chair of the United Way campaigns for the local dental society and the IU Indianapolis campus. He was involved with the Boy Scouts of America as a Cub Master, scout Master, District Commissioner, and District Vice-Commissioner. Dr. Andres, and his wife Ida, have been faithful supporters of the School of Dentistry, and have established a scholarship for graduate prosthodontic students.
Jerry had many hobbies, including gardening, woodworking, fishing and boating. All of his graduate students, and many of his friends and co-workers were the recipients of his hand turned pen and pencil sets. We were also able to enjoy the “fruits” of his gardening skills.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Ida; four children; David Andres of Ft. Worth, TX, Duane Andres (Kiran) of Schaumburg, IL, Dawn Hostetler (Joe) of Brownsburg, IN and Daniel Andres (Melissa) of Carmel, IN, and twelve grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers, Joe and Marlin Andres (Vicki) and sisters, Janet Regan (Dan), Virginia Balmer, Joyce Young (John), Jackie Colin (Mike), Judy Sullivan, Gina Cox (Mike), Connie Missi (Tim) and Shelly Cox (Tim).
I am unable to properly describe all of the positive contributions Dr. Andres has had on our campus, school, students and profession. I do know that we all are much better for having the opportunity to be his student, colleague, and friend.
Thus, be it resolved, that this memorial resolution be placed in the minutes of Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis Faculty Council with a moment of silence in his honor. A copy of this resolution will be delivered to his family.
This resolution is written on behalf of Dr. Andres’ students, and the staff and faculty of the School of Dentistry. It was prepared by David Brown, Professor of Prosthodontics.
