Assistant Professor, Indiana University School of Nursing
1938 – 2004
Minnie D. Anderson, Assistant Professor (1975 - 2002), made significant contributions to maternity nursing and the clinical education of nurses at Indiana University School of Nursing. Professor Anderson’s thoughtful wisdom and careful deliberation were valued by her colleagues and her students.
Minnie was born in Oak Grove, Kentucky where she spent her early years and later moved to Evansville, Indiana. In her pursuit for higher education, she attended and graduated from Indiana State University School of Nursing in Terre Haute with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing, and earned a Masters of Science Degree in Nursing from the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington.
Minnie’s early employment years were at Union Hospital in Terre Haute where she subsequently became Head Nurse in Labor and Delivery. In 1970, Indiana State University recognized her expertise and she was recruited by that University as a Clinical Instructor in Labor and Delivery. In January 1975, she was appointed Clinical Instructor of Nursing in the Maternal and Child Health Department at the Indiana University School of Nursing. She dearly loved working with students and teaching them how to be good nurses. She was subsequently promoted to Assistant Professor and continued to teach until her retirement in May 2002.
Minnie brought to clinical nursing education, as described by one of her colleagues, “quite thoughtful wisdom reflective of some careful deliberation”. She was a long standing student advocate and a mentor to nursing students, always helping them to be successful and quietly providing them with praise, encouragement and help to analyze their performance.
Minnie’s area of expertise was maternal and child health nursing. Professor Anderson served as a role model for students and was especially supportive to anxious students in ways that made them successful in the labor and delivery, post partum and newborn clinical settings. She demonstrated commitment and dedication to faculty governance as evidenced by her considerable committee work related to human rights, affirmative action, and faculty recruitment.
Professor Anderson was a valuable member of the nursing profession and contributed to the larger community through her service in organizations such as, the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN), Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc., and Indiana Nursing Diagnosis Association.
This memorial resolution is presented to the Faculty Council of Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis as an expression of the School and campus faculty’s appreciation of Professor Anderson’s contribution to the University. Upon adoption of the resolution we request that a copy be sent to her husband, Mr. Harold Anderson, 5431 Fenmore Road, Indianapolis, IN 46228.
