James Warren Smith Professor of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine of the Indiana University School of Medicine

Stephen Dean Allen, James Warren Smith Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine died September 26, 2012, after a brief illness. He was a 1965 graduate of Indiana University with an AB degree in Microbiology. He joined the Combined Degree Program at the IU School of Medicine in Bloomington graduating with an MD and Masters in Microbiology in 1970.
His residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology was completed at Vanderbilt University in 1974 with certification in 1975. He was proud to be able to join the Country Music scene in Nashville where he played his electric bass. He was a Medical Officer with the United States Public Health Service at the CDC in Atlanta from 1974 to 1977.
He joined the Department of Clinical Pathology at the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1977 and was soon given responsibility for directing the microbiology laboratories at IU, Wishard, and the Veterans Administration Hospitals. He worked tirelessly to continue to elevate the state of microbiology identification at IUMC.
He attained certification in medical microbiology through the American Board of Pathology in 1984. He contributed more than a hundred peer reviewed journal articles relating to anaerobic microbiology and more than 60 book chapters in microbiology.
He was a Trustee of the American Board of Pathology from 1995 to 2006 and served as President of the Board in 2003. He had been a member of The Alliance of Distinguished Rank Professors since 2006.
His musical talents allowed him to participate in several Indianapolis jazz bands including "The Residue," "Route 66," "The Midnight Sanity," and the "Shirley Judkins Band."
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Vally; his daughter Amy, and his son, Chris (Antonia), and two grandchildren, Esme and Sam.
